Last Call to Local Food Establishments

Apply for the 2023 Excellence in Food Safety Awards

Everyone loves going out to their favorite restaurant — especially in Washoe County, which offers a wide array of cuisines and opportunities to share great food with loved ones. It may be easy to know when food is delicious, but how do you know that the food being served is safe to eat?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 6 Americans get sick and about 3,000 Americans die from foodborne illness each year. Restaurants and other food establishments have the power to prevent foodborne illness from spreading by putting food safety at the heart of their practices.

Are you a restaurateur, chef, manager, or other food worker who knows your restaurant goes the extra mile when it comes to food safety? Show the Washoe County community how much you care about keeping the food you serve safe to eat by applying for the Excellence in Food Safety Awards Program with the Washoe County Health District!

The Excellence in Food Safety (EFS) Awards program recognizes and showcases food establishments in Washoe County that demonstrate long-term commitments to food safety. Participation in the program publicizes not only the hard work, but also the achievements, of restaurants with a food-safety focus.

Any food establishment that meets the EFS Awards program qualifications will receive:

  • An official Excellence in Food Safety Award certificate
  • A window sticker to post at its facility
  • A digital logo to display on websites and social media
  • A gold star denoting the restaurant on the Washoe Eats App, not to mention free advertising for the establishment as a winner of the Excellence in Food Safety Award!

Winners of the Excellence in Food Safety Award are publicly recognized for their accomplishments by the Washoe County District Board of Health, featured on the EFS Awards website, and included in promotional materials for future iterations of the program.

Restaurant patrons and consumers can get involved with the EFS Awards, too! You can be proactive about your family’s health while supporting local businesses by knowing a restaurant’s health permit status. Restaurants that qualify for the EFS Awards demonstrate that they care about the health of Washoe County residents; you can show local business owners that their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed by enjoying a delicious, healthy, and safe meal at their places of business. Download the Washoe Eats App and check for a gold star next to the restaurant’s name before deciding where to eat.
