Amanda Burden is founder, publisher, and editor of edible Reno-Tahoe magazine. A longtime journalist and passionate supporter of local food, she shares stories that celebrate the people, places, and flavors that shape Northern Nevada and the Sierra region.

We are coming up on the three-year anniversary of the pandemic shutdown, and it may appear outwardly that those involved in the food industry have rebounded and are back to normal. While mask mandates are gone, labor shortages and high costs for goods still are problems. Our cover storyย delves into the situation and offers poignant perspectives from those in the trenches. The story reminded me that itโ€™s more important than ever to support local food, drink, and other businesses. See our Eat & Drink Local Guide and Advertiser Directory for ideas on how to keep your dollars local.

Also in this issue, youโ€™ll find a feature on five locally beloved restaurants and the dishes theyโ€™d never dare take off their menus. What are your favorite dishes at local family restaurants? Tell us about them on our social media pages.

Healthy botanical beverages seem to be a hot trend. The owners of Great Basin Apothecary in Fallon and Leche de Luna Apothecary in Reno give us recommendations for clean, restorative drinks in alcohol consumptionโ€™s high season. Another feature connects you to sources for herbal mixes promoting wellness and serenity.

We love stories about giving back and we have a couple to share in this issue. Learn about the Sam Saibini Christmas Food Basket Program, turning 90 this December. And meet Grandma Norma McGee, 98, who breaks barriers around the table with eggplant parm.

I must thank our contributors and community for supporting our work. I am astonished to have received many accolades in September. On Sept. 16, we won the PBS Reno Spotlight Award for Extraordinary Local Business. Then on Sept. 24, we won 10 awards from the Nevada Press Association. These honors go out to our entire team, including phenomenally talented writers, editors, photographers, and designers. I would like to especially thank Jaci Goodman, edible Reno-Tahoeโ€™s co-publisher and advertising director, and Jessica Santina, edible Reno-Tahoeโ€™s managing editor. These two are among the most hardworking, reliable, and lovely people I know. I couldnโ€™t create this magazine without them.

Cheers!
