Featured Artist: Claudia Garza

California-based artist Claudia Garza develops paintings that speak to others about beauty, color, and sometimes humor that exist in our world today. Part of her process is to live with her subjects. This may involve setting up a still life and then walking and sitting around it for a couple days before picking up a brush, or locating a breathtaking landscape but first hiking it and photographing it before setting up her easel. This helps her find the hidden colors in the shadows and highlights and delight in capturing their secrets, feeling the colors and finding the shades on her pallet to match.

Born in Chicago, Garza was exposed to art at an early age when she was selected to attend a junior program at the Art Institute of Chicago. From then on, art always has been in her life. In 2004, she relocated to South Lake Tahoe. She attributes her renewed passion for painting to Lake Tahoe Community College, where she continues to hone her skills in its art program. Living in the Sierra has continually given her subject matter, and exploring her next site is all part of her process and inspiration. Her Cooped Up Too Long and Landscapes of the Sierra series can be seen this winter at Poe Rava Gem Co. and Black Pearl Gallery in South Lake Tahoe.
