Some people enjoy an alcoholic drink now and then, while some others, for a multitude of reasons, choose to live alcohol free. Luckily for those in the latter group, times are changing. While peer pressure still can be a factor for those not drinking in social situations, it seems to be less so these days as society moves to be more health conscious and understanding of alcohol’s potential ills.

While I enjoy wine and cocktails, when I give my liver a break and choose clean drink options, I feel better and sleep better. After a clean spell, when I introduce alcohol back into my system, my body rebels. I know moderation is key, but I don’t always heed that advice.

For some, sobriety is a necessity. After an alcohol-soaked holiday season and with a nod to the dry January trend, this, our annual Drinks! edition, is the perfect time to explore sobriety through locals’ eyes.

The high-stress restaurant business is notoriously filled with temptations of all kinds, including the requisite end-of-shift drink that sometimes leads to five. Hear stories of local chefs as they take you through their travails and roads to sobriety. Learn about local programs to help women stay sober. For those who want the taste of alcohol without its effects, our own Michael C. Moberly offers tips and recipes for alcohol-free sippers. Perfect for the season are our features on how to make your own mocktail syrups from foraged Douglas fir needles and crab apples.

In addition to these features, we balance our coverage with a few spirits-forward stories. For those who like boozy beverages, be sure to drink local and support Reno-Tahoe producers. To inspire you, we have features on Revision Brewery in Sparks and a whole package of stories on whiskey with local sources such as Frey Ranch in Fallon and High Mark Distillery in Reno.

Finally, don’t miss our Wedding Guide, Valentine’s Day Gift Guide, Home Guide, and Health & Wellness Guide in this issue — our biggest ever. In the guides, you’ll find tons of resources to support local businesses.

After all, it’s about helping our friends, families, and neighbors thrive. Whether you lend an ear to someone having a hard time (perhaps a friend on the path to sobriety) or a dollar to a person, charity, or local business, we appreciate you. You make our community stronger.

Cheers!

Amanda
