The 36th annual World Championship Outhouse Races is a free-to-attend, quirky commode competition that takes over the center of town with costumed racers and their themed outhouses. Teams are pitted against each other two at a time in an all-out sprint down C Street. They’re rolling fast and all decked out for their shot at the latrine title and your vote for best outhouse.

Thousands line the historic boardwalks for this age-old toilet tradition. It is the only outhouse race in the U.S. that began as a political protest. One fateful day, the use of outdoor toilets was banned, and angry residents pushed, pulled, and dragged their outhouses to town hall. Now, it’s the wackiest weekend of the year in Virginia City and an unforgettable way to explore everything the town has to offer!
