This is fantastic news for the city government, which has actively supported the summer establishment for the past 11 years since the market first started. Carson City is the only market in the state of Nevada that is still supported by local government in this case, it occupies a line-item budget at the Office of Business Development, receiving monetary support yearly and service support weekly, with setup, breakdown, and monitoring of events by city employees included.

Market Coordinator Linda Marrone is passionate about and proud of her vendors and the way their individual endeavors collectively create a wonderful resource for the local community. She says people come from as far away as Sparks each week to gain access to the breadth of produce and crafts. Her excitement about being selected by the FMC is evident.

“It is very gratifying to work hard and be recognized for all that effort over the years by a national organization of your peers,” Marrone says.

Maintaining the integrity of the farmers’ market and the quality of the vendors is of paramount importance to Marrone.

“We have 15 Nevada farmers and ranchers (and four Californians), more than all of the other markets in the state combined. Our market always has worked with the smaller Nevada farmers and continues to be an avenue for them.”

Her commitment to continue a partnership with the local USDA office and its Feds Feed Families food drive has helped supply more than 1,500 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables to members of the community who are in need. During the lead up to NFMW, local sellers are asked to donate produce that in turn is distributed to two local nonprofit organizations in the area.

What is the most rewarding thing about her job?

“Knowing you are providing a place where farmers, local businesses, artisans, musicians, and customers can gather each week, which is mutually beneficial for everyone,” Marrone says. “It’s a healthy community gathering for 22 weeks every spring and summer. Oh, and to have such access to all the fruits and vegetables at your fingertips!”
