  • Pete Coscarart

    The Carson City food community bid farewell to a beloved local. The owner of Villa Basque Cafรฉ and Deli, Pete Coscarart, died at 72. On Feb. 10, a celebration was held at the cafe.ย The restaurant will remain open, run by his son-in-law Josue Valladares. A community celebration of life is scheduled for Feb. 28 at Calvary Chapel in Carson City.

  • Jesus โ€œChuyโ€ Gutierrez

    The community is mourning the loss of Jesus โ€œChuyโ€ Gutierrez, the owner of three Mari Chuyโ€™s restaurants in the Reno area (in Midtown, the Village at Rancharrah, and the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. His Sparks location was closed in early 2025). The prominent community figure suffered severe lung complications related to several bouts of COVID-19. He died on March 18, 2025.

  • Paul Abowd

    On March 11, 2024, Paul Abowd (founder, along with his late wife Adele, of Adeleโ€™s Restaurant and Lounge in Carson City), passed away following health struggles. He also opened Pegโ€™s Glorified Ham and Eggs and The Stone House Cafรฉ in Reno. His son, Charlie, took over running the kitchen at Adeleโ€™s (while his wife, Karen, ran the front of the house) before the iconic restaurant was destroyed by a fire. Paul was 96.
