Advanced ENT Sinus Center

With ragweed and other nuisances, the fall months present their own unique allergens that affect many in the area. Luckily, Stacey Hudson, MD, FACS, and Theresa Birchfield, PA-C, with Advanced ENT Sinus Center in Reno, specialize in treating the symptoms of seasonal allergies.

“We can help with the nasal congestion, runny nose, itching eyes, head pain, pressure, eustachian tube dysfunction, and other symptoms,” Birchfield explains.

To get started, Hudson or Birchfield takes an inventory of a patient’s symptoms and designs a customized treatment plan.

“If the symptoms warrant it, we have the ability to perform a CT scan in our office and can differentiate between seasonal allergies, non-allergic nose problems, and chronic sinusitis,” Birchfield says.

Patients with seasonal allergies are typically treated with a mix of over-the-counter and prescription medications and nose sprays.

Hudson and Birchfield work primarily with adult patients, and Advanced ENT Sinus Center is one of the only practices on the West Coast offering balloon sinuplasty — an in-office procedure used to alleviate chronic sinusitis.

Carson Tahoe Health

Health and community go hand in hand. A collaborative, engaged community is resilient and develops the capacity, resource sharing, and infrastructure to support all citizens in accessing opportunities for health and well-being. Everyone has a role to play, including individuals in schools to social services, local governments, local parks and recreation departments, service groups, faith organizations, not-for-profits, and health centers. In the flurry of work in this fast-paced world, it can be hard to make time for collaboration and the sharing of resources, but that is exactly the investment needed to make progress.

The Carson Tahoe Health Community Partnership Fund was established to facilitate new collaborations and shared investments, build community capacity and community leaders, and bring like-minded partners together around a common cause: health equity, the opportunity for every person to live their healthiest life.

“The fund is designed to make strategic investments that will create a healthier community for all and to find those innovative projects and collaborations that will really move the needle,” says Amy Hyne-Sutherland, Carson Tahoe Health’s director of mission integration. “The best ideas to improve communities come from community members who are directly experiencing challenges and come up with creative, sustainable, culturally relevant ways to make their environments and lives better. Those community members don’t often have access to funding, and we’re trying to change that.”

The Carson Tahoe Health Community Partnership Fund provides grant assistance to projects that advance health equity by addressing the social determinants of health, which are the conditions in which people live, work, play, and age. Through investments in nature conservation efforts such as the River Fork Ranch in Genoa; infrastructure for programs serving seniors, support to Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space to encourage participation; scholarships for youths to participate in sports and outdoor recreation; investments in local mental health clinics and food insecurity programs; and more, the fund can amplify and support the strong work already happening in the community.

“While health care is our strength at Carson Tahoe, and we are working to expand health promotion services, we know it’s our community that’s building the healthy, resilient environment so critical to our mission,” Hyne-Sutherland says. “We want to be active partners, catalysts, in that work.”

Sierra Smiles/Sierra Sleep Airway and Wellness Center

Is your child getting enough sleep at night? When school is in session, it’s important to get your young ones on a healthy sleep schedule.

“At Sierra Smiles, we understand just how important quality sleep is to a person’s complete health,” explains Dr. John Bocchi. “In fact, we’ve created an entire area of our practice that is devoted solely to helping our patients sleep better. If you’re concerned about your child getting enough rest each night, we’re here to help!”

Signs a child or teen may be sleep deprived include anxiety, behavioral issues, hyperactivity, uncharacteristic aggression or temper tantrums, trouble waking up in the morning, sleeping outside of regular nap times or bedtimes, memory issues, falling grades, trouble paying attention, poor coordination, and irritability.

If you have noticed any of these issues with your child and are unable to resolve them with good sleep hygiene, it’s time to have your child take a sleep test. SleepImage is a non-invasive and user-friendly tool that monitors your child’s heart rate and breathing activity to assess sleep quality as they sleep comfortably in their own bed at home.

UVAL Care

One of the most common misconceptions about CBD is that it creates an intoxicated feeling similar to THC.

As UVAL Care founder Bianca Blesching explains, “CBD is considered a psychoactive substance, but not all psychoactive substances make you high. CBD is one of those that doesn’t. This is why you can enjoy all the mood-boosting benefits of CBD without feeling intoxicated.”

In addition, studies have consistently revealed CBD’s anti-depressant and anti-anxiety properties, resulting in improved mood and concentration without addictive or intoxicating effects.

Downtown Vision

Comprehensive eye exams by a doctor of optometry are an important part of caring for your eyes, vision, and overall health.

During an exam with Downtown Vision in Reno, patients can expect to review their histories and take preliminary tests to determine overall eye health. Additional evaluations may include:

  • Visual acuity measurements to determine how clearly each eye sees
  • Keratometry/topography of the curvature of the cornea, which is important for contact lens fitting
  • Refraction to establish the lens power needed to compensate for any refractive error
  • Eye focusing, eye teaming, and eye movement testing to assess accommodation, ocular motility, and binocular vision, to understand how well the eyes focus, move, and work together

Supplemental testing may be needed based on the results of the previous tests to confirm or rule out possible problems, clarify uncertain findings, or conduct a more in-depth assessment.
