Sierra Smiles Complete Health Dentistry/Sierra Sleep Airway and Wellness Center
At Sierra Smiles Complete Health Dentistry and Sierra Sleep Airway and Wellness Center, serving the Reno and Lake Tahoe area, the doctors and teams are committed to uncovering and addressing the root causes of oral and airway health issues while helping patients prevent future problems. From a relaxing spa-like dental experience to life-changing sleep evaluations, both centers share a mission: empowering patients to achieve optimal whole-body health.

โ€œMany patients are surprised to learn how closely oral health and airway health are connected,โ€ owner Dr. John Bocchi explains. โ€œSleep-disordered breathing, including sleep apnea, is often overlooked or treated only at the symptom level. By focusing on and identifying the underlying causes, we can create solutions that last and can have a great impact on your oral health and overall health.โ€

At Sierra Sleep Airway and Wellness Center, advanced testing and personalized assessments uncover structural, functional, and lifestyle factors that contribute to airway obstruction, poor sleep quality, and other related health concerns. Sleep-disordered breathing isnโ€™t just about snoring; itโ€™s linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cognitive decline, ADHD, and even oral health issues such as dry mouth, decay, and gum disease.

Just as Sierra Smiles employees use cutting-edge oral cancer screenings and saliva oral DNA testing to pinpoint bacterial risks, the team at Sleep Airway and Wellness Center applies leading technology to diagnose airway-related concerns that can have a serious impact on sleep and overall health. This root-cause approach ensures that patients donโ€™t just manage symptoms with machines, but instead receive comprehensive care that addresses the underlying problem and prevents further health concerns in the future.

We often take our sense of sight for granted as a window to the world that functions tirelessly. Yet while most eye discomforts โ€” including itchy eyes, a mild infection, or a stray eyelash โ€” are minor irritations, there are specific, urgent situations that demand immediate medical attention. These are true ocular emergencies, in which every second can be the difference between a full recovery and permanent vision loss. Knowing the distinction is critical, as a delay of even minutes can lead to irreversible damage.

The most common and devastating of these is a chemical burn. Whether from a household cleaner or a workplace chemical, the immediate priority is to wash the eye out with copious amounts of water. For at least 15 to 20 minutes, irrigate the eye nonstop, even while en route to your eye-care provider. Alkaline chemicals, such as those found in ammonia or lye, are particularly insidious as they continue to destroy tissue long after initial contact, silently damaging the cornea and internal structures of the eye.

A penetrating eye injury from a shard of glass, metal fragment, or any foreign object is another dire situation. In this case, the rule is to not remove the object. Attempting to do so can cause further damage. The eye should be shielded and protected from any pressure while you seek immediate medical care.

Another category of true emergencies involves the retina. A sudden shower of flashes and floaters, especially when accompanied by a โ€œcurtainโ€ or shadow spreading across your vision, can be a sign of retinal detachment. This is an urgent issue that requires a timely surgical procedure to prevent the delicate retinal tissue from dying.

Similarly, a sudden, painless loss of vision in one eye could signal a retinal artery occlusion or a โ€œstrokeโ€ of the eye. This is a medical emergency that can be treated, but only within a narrow time window, often measured in hours, before the lack of blood flow causes irreversible retinal damage.

These are not situations when you should wait and see if they get better on their own. Instead, they are urgent red flags that require immediate attention. Contact your eye-care provider immediately. If itโ€™s outside of normal business hours, do not hesitate to go to the emergency room. Taking immediate action could be the key to saving your vision.

Young pretty woman accidentally cuts her finger during cooking at home in white kitchen

The holidays are a time for gathering, celebrating, and, of course, cooking. But with all that time spent in the kitchen, accidents can happen. Cuts, burns, and foodborne illnesses are among the most common injuries seen during the season. Dr. David Lemak, medical director of urgent care at Tahoe Forest Health System in Truckee, Tahoe City, and Olympic Valley, shares practical advice for keeping your celebrations safe.

โ€œWe see a lot of hand injuries from knives and broken glass,โ€ Lemak says. โ€œThey usually happen when people are distracted, rushing, or reaching into a sink or trash can that contains a sharp object.โ€

To reduce risk, avoid leaving knives in the sink, and store them safely in a block or drawer. Always cut on a stable cutting board since slippery surfaces can cause dangerous slips. Cover broken glass or other sharp items before disposing of them.

Holiday meals often mean crowded kitchens and lots of hot pans and pots.

โ€œScalds and burns are very common this time of year,โ€ Lemak explains.

He recommends simple precautions: Keep pot handles turned inward on the stove, avoid dangling jewelry or loose sleeves that can brush against burners, and always use hot pads when handling hot items.

These special meals should bring joy, not illness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, norovirus and salmonella are the most common causes of food poisoning.

โ€œFood safety is critical,โ€ Lemak says. โ€œTake the time to thaw frozen meats in the refrigerator, never on the counter. Clean up raw meat juices thoroughly, wash fruits and vegetables, and use a thermometer to ensure meats are cooked to a safe temperature.โ€

Despite best efforts, accidents still occur. Lemak advises: โ€œRinse cuts under cool running water, apply pressure, and bandage as needed. Seek urgent care if the injury is severe or youโ€™re unsure.โ€

Tahoe Forest Health System offers three urgent care clinics to serve the community: in both Truckee and Tahoe City (open daily, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., including holidays) and Olympic Valley (open daily during ski season, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., including holidays).

โ€œWhether it is a cut, burn, or illness, our urgent care team is here to help so you can get back to enjoying the season,โ€ Lemak says.

Beam
Itโ€™s laser season! Winter is the perfect time to refresh your skin, and one of peopleโ€™s favorite ways to do it is with the Solta Fraxel Dual. Cooler months mean less sun exposure, making this the ideal season for healing, restoration, and radiance.

Fraxel is a favorite because itโ€™s designed around each individual. Unlike one-size-fits-all treatments, it can be customized to target exactly what the skin needs, whether thatโ€™s smoothing wrinkles, fading sun damage, or restoring an overall healthy glow.

What makes Fraxel unique is its two advanced wavelengths that can be used separately or combined in a single session:

  • 1550 nm: Stimulates collagen deep in the skin, softening wrinkles, improving texture, and strengthening the skinโ€™s foundation for lasting resilience.
  • 1927 nm: Treats the surface by correcting sun damage, discoloration, and uneven tone, leaving skin clearer, brighter, and healthier.

When combined, these wavelengths treat multiple layers of the skin at once. The results are visible and long-lasting: smoother texture, more even tone, and skin that looks younger and healthier over time.

Winter makes Fraxel even more effective. With less sun exposure, skin can recover more comfortably, and results last longer. Itโ€™s the perfect way to reset before spring.

Whether the goal is reducing fine lines, fading stubborn spots, or simply giving the skin a seasonal refresh, Fraxel adapts to everyone. Every treatment is personalized, every result is unique, and the confidence gained lasts well beyond the season.
