December

Apples, arugula, basil (from indoor grow operations), beets, carrots, chard, ginger root (a Hawaiian variety from Custom Gardens in Silver Springs, Nev.), kale, mixed lettuces, onions, parsley, potatoes, radishes, rutabagas, squashes (winter), tomatoes (from indoor grow operations), turnips

In season in California: citrus, kiwis, olives, persimmons, and pomegranates

The carnival squash is a hybrid between sweet dumpling and acorn squashes. Enjoy it roasted with butter and brown sugar, or even stuffed with apple and thyme. To roast, preheat oven to 400 degrees F, cut in half, cleaning out seeds and strings. Coat each half with a sprinkle of salt and a little butter or high-heat oil. Bake about an hour or until squash is left soft all the way through.

“I see myself as one part graphic designer, one part composition artist, and the rest? A foodie who loves to find great food! My work is created digitally, mixing images from both purchased and free-to-use stock sources. The images usually are altered in color, texture, and appearance and then placed against an original background design. The designs are composed for posters, postcards, and social media. I am happy to do commissioned projects, but I do these projects on the side and as labors of love!”

Bennett’s work almost is exclusively created for the nonprofit sector, for groups such as the Truckee Community Farmers’ Market, Slow Food Lake Tahoe, and the Truckee Roundhouse.
