COMMUNITY BREW

Under the Rose Brewing Co. is the newest kid on the block.

While one local brewery celebrates 20 years in business this fall (see article on Great Basin Brewing in the same issue), there’s a brand-new brewery in Reno turning out handcrafted beers from along the old Lincoln Highway. Under the Rose Brewing Co. opened in the summer on East Fourth Street, adding to the growing brewing scene.

In contrast to the beer world of the mid-’90s, Under the Rose was born in a time of sophisticated beer drinkers who have pushed standards of quality higher and forced a reinvention of brewing as an art form. And unlike recent trends toward extreme beers with palate-wrecking amounts of ingredients and aggressive spikes of flavor, founder and president Scott Emond and brewmaster Eliot Hartley are focusing on creating a portfolio of “dry, sessionable, easy-drinking beers,” Emond says.

While some of their brews may follow traditional-style profiles, Emond and Hartley plan to blend styles, create hybrids, and experiment.

Emond explains their philosophy as “like French cuisine — you can identify the components of the beer, like rye, for example, and there might be 10 different flavors you can pick out that all come together in one satiating taste.”

Of course, the brewery itself is a destination. Whether you want to drink the beers at the source, try out a pilot batch, or play bocce ball, Under the Rose is a neighborhood brewery. In addition to getting a chance to share their passion for flavorful, interesting beers, the partners/owners have a chance to support the area’s growing brewery industry. Emond, Hartley, and co-founder (and Emond’s wife) Jesse Kleinedler encourage customers to drink their beer, as well as other local beer from other local businesses, and they are enthusiastic to incorporate local hops and malt into their beers.

“[It is] a community-supported brewery that supports the community,” Emond says.
