I’m an egg lover. My favorite cooked versions of this little miracle food are cheesy huevos rancheros, creamy quiche, and the everything-fresh-on-hand omelets that co-publisher Jaci Goodman prepares on sleepy Sunday mornings. 

Packed full of protein, iron, and minerals — as well as lutein and zeaxanthin for retinal health and choline for liver function, cell activity, and infant memory function development — eggs truly are incredible edible globes of joy. And local eggs are even better because they’re fresher (demonstrated by the bright orange yolk in local choices versus the sad, pale-colored yolk in most supermarket varieties). Plus, buying local allows you to connect with the farmer who provided them and trust the way in which they were produced and the animals raised.

We’ll introduce you to six local egg farmers in our cover story. While many bring chicken eggs to market, you’ll also discover Reno-area farmers who raise ducks, geese, Japanese quail, and emus for their eggs (as well as for meat and companionship). We hope this story inspires you to seek out products from these (and other) local farmers.

In this issue, you’ll also learn about a restaurant whose chef is creating authentic Tuscan delicacies, a Reno farmer growing food forests, a program that keeps locals’ hearts healthy, and inspiration for cooking with invasive species. One of my favorite stories in this issue is perfectly timed for the season of Earth Day. Hopefully it motivates you to stop using synthetic chemicals in your yard. In spring, pesky weeds and insects start popping up. Don’t reach for that bottle of poison, such as toxic Roundup, which, for instance, kills the 98 percent of insects that are beneficial. Resist the urge to be like a lot of landscape companies and your neighbors. We provide you with easy solutions that are better, long term, for your yard (especially your soil), as well as for the environment in general. Grow green this year!
