I love a well-mixed cocktail. That perfectly balanced combination of spirits (preferably local) and fresh ingredients (preferably seasonal) make it hard to have just one. And I respect the skill that goes into crafting high-quality wine and beer. Luckily, I don’t have to travel far for a proper sip. The drinks scene in Reno-Tahoe has come into its own, and it keeps blossoming with new choices every several months. Just a few short years ago it was hard to find an innovative brew or even a classic cocktail. Remember when the most exotic mixed drink around these parts was a vodka cran or whiskey soda? Now it’s easy to discover a great mixed drink and beautifully nuanced beer at local bars and breweries, and restaurateurs even are making them a priority.

It’s obvious that we love our beer here. The number of beer-focused tasting rooms and beer choices is off the charts. For instance, Piñon Bottle in Midtown Reno has 300 different beers in the coolers and 36 rotate on taps, Beer NV in South Reno has 60 rotating on taps, and Brewforia in Incline Village carries 500 brands in the coolers. Also, you can order flights of beer at the above spots, and more, to try before you buy a six-pack or full pint. So whether it’s a barrel-aged sour, saison, lager, IPA, or unfiltered beer, you’ll find a local choice to savor.

We are beer focused in this issue, but we also offer stories for the wine and cocktail drinkers among us. For instance, for the first time since Prohibition, urban wineries are popping up in the state (hurray!), including Nevada Sunset Winery on Fourth Street in Reno. A passionate group of locals put in a lot of hard work to change the law so that wine could be made and sold in the state’s largest counties, Washoe and Clark.

Speaking of innovative cocktails, we are throwing one heck of a good party on Thursday, Feb. 22 at Meadowood Mall in Reno. We hope you’ll join us for our second-annual Good Spirits cocktail- and food-pairing event. For details, visit Ediblerenotahoe.com. See you there!

Cheers!
