Artist profile

Amerique Powell received her bachelor of art degree in studio art from California State University, Channel Islands in 2009, and her master of fine art in painting from University of Nevada, Reno in 2012. She has exhibited her paintings across the country, including a solo exhibition at the Nevada Museum of Art in 2013. She currently teaches and lectures at the University of Nevada, Reno and is the art teacher at Sierra Nevada Academy Charter School.

Powell is known for her large-scale oil paintings of cats and patterns, but she recently has begun experimenting with watercolors, as she embarks on a new path into the world of illustration. In the above piece, she created texture by using salt and crumpled paper and blending colors by using a wet-on-wet technique. After all of the color and texture were laid down, she used colored pencils and crayons to add definition and depth. She was inspired by the rich, jewel-like colors of heirloom carrots and beets and enjoyed the process of attempting to capture the beauty and ephemerality of garden-grown produce.
